Automated Windows Updates

Microsoft releases free updates for Windows on a regular basis. These updates often patch security holes in their software that viruses and hackers try to exploit.

Windows 98 must be updated manually. To view the manual update instructions click on the following link: Manually Updating Windows. Windows 2000, ME and XP can also be updated manually using the same instructions.

To automate updates for Windows 2000 or XP, see the steps listed below.

Automating updates for Windows 2000:

1) In Control Panel, double-click Automatic Updates.
2) Click Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify.
3) Click to select the day and time that you want to download and install updates. [Once a week is recommended]

Automating updates for Windows XP:

1) In Control Panel, double-click System.
2) On the Automatic Updates tab, click Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify.
3) Click to select the day and time that you want to download and install updates. [Once a week is recommended]
